Could the Instagram like count soon disappear? That is the question a lot of people have been asking over the past few weeks. You see, on April 18th 2019, code hunter Jane Manchun revealed that Instagram is testing a new feature that will stop users from seeing the amount of likes a post has.
Now, this could easily fall under the rumour category. However, Manchun is actually pretty well known for her work. Indeed, she uncovers unreleased social media features for fun. And most of the time, she hits the nail on the head. (You can read more about her by clicking here).
Evidently, this means people trust what she says. But, how real is her last statement? Is Instagram actually going to make the like count disappear? Well, the truth is that it’s just too soon to know whether or not this will actually happen.
As a matter of fact, an Instagram spokesperson came out to say they are not testing such a feature at the moment. However, they added that they’re always exploring ways to reduce pressure on the platform.
In a nutshell, only time will reveal the truth. It is obvious that Instagram will not confirm something that went viral over a tweet. So, perhaps they will wait until people have forgotten about the “rumour” and then release the feature.
Instagram Without A Like Count
So, it’s clear that there’s no need to worry about the like count disappearing. At least not for the moment. However, let’s go ahead and imagine a scenario where we no longer have a like count at all. What then? Would this feature really be that bad?
According to Jane Manchun, Instagram is testing this feature with a single purpose. To get people to focus on the quality of what others post, rather than on the likes they receive.
Indeed, Instagram itself has stated the following: “We want your followers to focus on what you share, not how many likes your posts get”
Getting rid of the like count on Instagram could put an end to social pressure as we know it. You see, nowadays people worry too much about the likes they get on social media. It’s almost as if they are defined by it.
So, if Instagram were to get rid of it eventually, users wouldn’t need to feel bad for getting just a few likes.
Unfortunately, there would also be a negative scenario to the like count disappearing. You see, brands hire influencers based on the interactions they have on their social media channels. So, if the like count were to disappear, how would a brand know which influencer to hire?
All they’d be left with is the number of followers the influencer has. And you probably already know that the number of followers could easily be populated by bots. In other words, getting rid of the like count on Instagram could be bad for business.
We understand Instagram wanting to reduce social pressure from the platform. Naturally, getting rid of the like count would be a good way to do it. However, we don’t think the photo sharing app will risk its business model over anything.
Just think about it. Why would you launch an update that could compromise how brands connect with influencers? Anyway, Instagram is nothing if not unpredictable. So, who knows, maybe they will figure out a way to remove “the bad” from the feature and still release it. We’ll just have to be patient, and wait and see.
